The seventh edition has been modified to reflect changes in the discipline as well as comments from faculty and students who used the sixth edition. These modifications include
‧ A rewritten version of Chapter 3, Phonology, designed to improve the clarity and accessibility of this challenging area of linguistic analysis. This new version was authored by William O’Grady, Yvan Rose. and Carrie Dyck.
‧ Revision of individual chapters to make them more self-contained so that they can be used independently of other chapters in the book, giving Instructors greater flexibility in how they make use of the material that we present.
‧ An expanded Study Guide offering practice exercises covering all 15 chapters of the textbook, accompanied by art Instructor answer key.
‧ Better integration between the textbook and website, directing users to complementary material available to further their understanding of topics presented in specific chapters.
